A change of season calls for a change of routine! From back to school to the drop in temperature, there are more than enough reasons to get excited about giving your habits, style, and hair a bit of a refresh. Check out Maria’s top tips for freshening up your Fall hair routine! Hydrate Your Hair While this is especially important for curly, thick, and textured hair types, it’s a helpful tip for anyone looking to keep their hair healthy. While dryness can also come from the summer humidity, cold weather brings a different type of dehydration that can cause more tangles and flyaways. It’s crucial to moisturize on a regular basis with a hydrating shampoo & conditioner and a protective styling product. Try a Trim Summer fun can mean a lot of exposure to sunshine, high temperatures, chlorine, salt water, and humidity. While increasing the moisture in your everyday routine can be a good start, you may be better off cutting away the dead ends and giving your hair a clean slate. The Perfecter Oval is here and it’s one of our favorite innovations to date. Summer is wrapping up right before our eyes, but that doesn’t mean the heat will be subsiding any time soon. At Calista, we know you love your heat styling tools (that’s why we make them!), but sometimes, it can be nice to give your hair a few days off and try out some simple, no-heat styles that still leave you looking polished and stylish. Check out some of our favorites below! No-Heat Beach Waves When it comes to summer styles, there’s nothing more classic than beachy waves. To achieve them without using heat, apply some styling product with a bit of hold to slightly damp hair (we recommend Jousse Gel & Mousse Hybrid for a long-lasting hold). Flip head over and then gather hair into a tight twist. Pin over the top of your head and let dry overnight. When you unpin in the morning, you’ll have a loose, beachy wave. Add some Marine Salt Mist to lock in extra texture and a beachy scent! Half-Up Twist Half up, half down styles are a great go-to for those days when you’re working with unwashed hair. After applying some dry shampoo (Day Off is our must-have lightweight formula), gather a section of hair from one side at the front and twist up. Lay twist across your crown, secure with a bobby pin or small clip. and repeat this on the other side. Tuck the ends underneath the first twist and secure with another pin or leave ends free flowing for a more laid-back look. Spray with a medium-hold hairspray (Embellish Finishing Spray or Duet Prep + Post Multi-Use Hairspray are great options) to secure your style. Texturized & Tousled This look is ideal for shorter styles! With a texturizing hair product like 02 Texturizer Spray or Embellish Texturizing Definer, tousle hair with your fingers for an effortless look that still has a stylized feel. For extra volume, take small sections of hair and create individual curls by twisting the hair around your finger and adding a little more product to help the style stay in place! Heatless Sleekness Believe it or not, a straightener isn’t the only way to achieve silky sleek style. Apply a smoothing, anti-frizz product, like Achieve 10 Styling Cream, all over your damp hair. Comb it out straight and let it air-dry for a relaxed, effortless look. For extra smoothing, apply Jousse Mend Masque in the shower. The rich formula penetrates strands to add sleekness and shine.

There are countless articles on how to get the perfect DIY blowout, but many of them feature complicated brush and blow-dry routines, time-consuming hot rollers, or long lists of steps that make the whole process feel so daunting. Worry not, BeautyBraves! There’s a better way – keep reading for our short and sweet how-to that gets into salon-secret tips and provides an easy guide to one of our favorite Calista tools. What You’ll Need Freshly Washed Hair (Jousse Cleanse & Condition is our favorite for this) Styling Product (check out our recommendations below!) Jousse Thermal Spray (protect those locks!) StyleDryer Pro Hair Drying Brush (trust us on this one) Step 1 Start by towel drying your freshly cleansed and conditioned hair. Wrap your towel around a section of hair and gently squeeze out excess water until you have damp hair ready for product. Step 2 Choose a styling product and work through damp hair.If your hair tends to frizz, we recommend Achieve 10 Styling Cream for smooth, shiny volume.If you want maximum volume or to highlight your natural waves, Embellish Texturizing Foam is the product for you!For a more texturized look, go with Jousse Gel & Mousse Hybrid.   Step 3Spritz on Jousse Thermal Spray from roots to ends, covering your whole head to protect from heat damage. Do not skip this step! It may seem inconsequential, but protecting your hair is incredibly important, especially as we age! Read more about aging hair here. Step 4Get your StyleDryer – Here’s the thing, we know that a round brush and hairdryer can work for creating a blowout. But Maria specifically created this tool to simplify the process, save you time, and make sure you get consistently fabulous results every time. We can’t recommend it enough! Step 5   Attach the oval brush attachment in your selected size (the longer your hair, the larger the size we recommend – check out our sizing guide to choose the perfect one for you!)       Step 6   Once your oval brush is attached, section hair to help stay in control while you dry. Turn StyleDryer onto the medium or high heat setting (these settings are great for styling and drying – we’ll get to the low setting later!) and start with the bottom half of your hair, choosing the right or left side to begin.     Step 7Place oval brush underneath the section starting at the root. Slowly turn the brush outward while brushing from root to tip, creating volume as you dry. Repeat on other side of hair and top section until hair is dry. Step 8   Now it’s time for that extra volume boost. So many of our instruction books include the phrase “Overdirect your section” – this basically means taking a section of hair and brushing it in the opposite direction of how it’s going to fall. For volume, you can overdirect your hair upward by starting at the crown and bringing a section forward, getting the hair to stand up before flipping it backwards.   Maria’s TipWant to lock in your look? Use the low heat setting on the StyleDryer to set your finished look and top off your blowout with a light finishing spray, like Airshape Hairspray – it adds a bit of hold to keep your style in place but is light enough that you can still run your fingers through your hair. As Maria always says, “Using a heated round brush is like riding a bike – once you do it, you never forget!” The Perfecter Pro is one of our most beloved tools, but that doesn’t mean that using a heated round brush for the first time is easy. Fear not BeautyBraves, we’re breaking down all the ins and outs of using a heated round brush to curl, lift, and smooth your hair! The Basics First and foremost, throw all of your curling wand knowledge out the window. Using a round brush to curl is a completely different process and if you try to use it the same way you would a curling iron, you’ll end up with a tangled mess. Next, remember that this tool’s got teeth! A heated round brush is specifically made to style and brush through your hair so that you have a more natural-looking curl and less opportunities to burn or singe your hair. Because the bristles are hard, too much twisting too quickly will lead to the tool getting stuck and rolling up from the bottom of your hair or taking too big of a section can also lead to a tangle. Hair styling is a learning process so be patient with yourself and take your time! Creating a Curl     To curl your hair with a heated round brush like our Perfecter Pro, start by brushing through a strand that’s around 1-2 inches thick. Hold the Perfecter behind that strand and keep the tool vertical. Place the top of your strand into the teeth at the top of the Perfecter and slowly turn the Perfecter back towards your head, allowing the teeth to comb through your hair as you turn. Once you’ve made one full rotation, hold for 5 seconds and allow the curl to set. Continue this process as you move down your strand, keeping the tool vertical and turning it slowly as you go. Do this process on your whole head for chic, spiral curls! Learning to Lift Getting lift with the Perfecter is dependent on your hair type. Typically, our clients love getting extra volume at the crown to make their hair look and feel a little fuller with a shorter style or a pixie cut. To get lift at the crown or root of your hair, hold the Perfecter horizontally and place it directly under the strand at the root, draping the hair over the tool and into the teeth. Hold for 10-15 seconds and then brush through for a little extra lift! Styling Some Smoothness While the Perfecter can be used to create smooth styles, try the TrianglPro for a true straight and sleek look. To get a little smoothness with your heated round brush, choose a section of hair and firmly hold the ends to create tension. Place the Perfecter horizontally over top of the strand. Salt Mist That salt air isn’t the only way to give your hair a beachy feel. Stocking up on a good salt mist not only leaves you feeling breezy and sun-kissed, it’s also really good for your hair. The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up, and vacation plans are on the horizon. It can only mean one thing – sweet summertime! While you may know it as the fast-track to frizzing out your hair, humidity is actually defined by the amount of moisture in the air. Because temperatures rise in the summer and warm air holds more moisture than cold air, summer is the prime season for humidity to be at its highest. How does this lead to frizz? Basically, frizz happens when the amount of moisture in the air is greater than the amount of moisture in your hair. The hydrogen in humid air reacts with the keratin proteins in your hair, creating new bonds between the keratin proteins, which causes each strand to fold or curl, also known as: you guessed it, frizz.   So…how can you keep it from affecting your hair? Work With Your HairDuring the summer, try your best not to work against your natural texture. It will only make your hair even more prone to humidity’s effects. If you have natural curls, highlight them with a volumizing foam or a thickening styling cream. If your hair is straight and sleek, use a hair oil to bring out its natural shine. Don’t Over WashToo much washing will strip your hair of its natural oils, which dries out your strands and leaves you that much more susceptible to frizz. Try only washing every other day to keep your hair looking and feeling great all summer long. Be sure to use a cleanse & condition regimen that hydrates your scalp so that your hair is moisturized from root to end! Spring has officially sprung! To celebrate, our founder Maria McCool sat down with one of our favorite QVC hosts, Amy Stran to talk all things Spring hair. Check out some of the highlights below! “When a season changes, I want a change!” Amy started us off with amazing words of wisdom that we can all relate to. As the ladies got more into the conversation, Maria dropped some serious hair knowledge about trends we should all be on the lookout for this year! Bring in Texture & Movement Spring is all about getting rid of the heaviness. Amy recently changed her style to have a little more dimension, getting rid of the one-length look she grew accustomed to and opting for an angled bob and some piecey layers. Maria pointed out that if you’re not in the mood for a full cut and color, you can easily add some texture with tools and products! Go With What Works for You! A commenter asked if Maria believes that older women should have shorter hair. Taking care of your skin is a vital part of self-care, but what about your hair? How can you be certain that the products, treatments, and tools you’re using are meant for you? Check out the guide below to uncover your hair type and unlock the styling tips you’ve been searching for. Scalp Moisture It all starts at the root. Your scalp could have a moisture level ranging from dry to normal to oily. Take notice of how your scalp feels about 2 days after a you shampoo and condition. If it seems to be flaky and stripped of natural oils, you likely have a dry scalp that could use a dose of hydration. This can come from a hydrating shampoo and conditioner or a specialized hair oil. On the other end of the spectrum is an oily scalp. If your hair is greasy and lacking in volume after a few days, you probably have an excess of oils. An oily scalp can be assisted with a texturizing powder or a dry shampoo that will remove some of that moisture and balance out the greasy buildup. Hair Texture Your hair’s texture comes down to its shape and the way your strands fall. The four types of texture are typically categorized by straight, wavy, curly, or coily. Pay attention to the way your hair dries to determine which of these types you fall under. If your hair dries without any curve whatsoever, you have straight hair. If it dries with a bit of an “S” shape or a slight curve, you have wavy hair. If it dries with a defined, loop-style curl, you have curly hair. If it dries with a springy, tight spiral or zig-zag pattern, you have coily hair. Different hair types benefit from different products and tools. Hair Structure Structure is less about how your hair looks and more about how it feels. When determining the structure of your hair, the easiest thing to do is run your fingers through it and separate out a single strand. Generally, hair is either fine, medium, or thick. There are a few ways to determine which you fall under, but our favorite is the feel test. Take that single strand and place it between your fingers. If you can’t feel it, you have thin hair. If you can feel it, it’s medium. If you feel a strong, thick strand, it’s thick. Now What? Armed with your new intel about your hair, product and tool shopping will be a breeze!
