What Causes Scalp Issues and How to Fix Them

by Calista Tools on Mar 11 2026
Why Scalp Health Is the Foundation of Fuller Looking, Healthier Hair  A healthy scalp is the foundation of healthier, fuller hair. When the scalp is exfoliated, clean, and hydrated, follicles can function properly, leading to less breakage and smoother, more resilient strands. But when the scalp becomes dry, irritated, or clogged with buildup, it can disrupt growth, increase breakage, and reduce shine and volume. Addressing scalp concerns early helps prevent common issues like dryness, thinning, and lack of volume. Whether your goal is stronger growth, improved curl definition, or less breakage, prioritizing scalp health establishes the foundation your hair needs to look and feel its best.  Common Signs of Scalp Imbalance and How They Affect Your Hair  The earliest signs of an imbalanced scalp are often felt before they are seen. Irritation, itchiness, tightness, or tenderness can result from product buildup, excess oil, dryness, or environmental factors. An imbalanced microbiome, clogged follicles, and lack of moisture further contribute to discomfort, flakes, greasiness, and sensitivity. Over time, these issues influence how your hair looks, feels, and behaves. Hair may look dull or flat, break more easily, or lose curl and wave definition. Curly and textured hair often becomes frizzy or undefined when the scalp lacks moisture, while fine or thinning hair can appear limp when buildup is present. Recognizing the causes and signs of your scalp issues allows you to care for the root of the issue before it impacts the look and feel of your hair.  How Exfoliating the Scalp Helps Remove Buildup and Support Healthier Growth  Exfoliation is the first step to restoring scalp health and supporting healthier, more beautiful hair. An exfoliating shampoo like JOUSSE  Cleanse lifts away buildup, excess oil, and impurities that collect on the scalp’s surface and around the follicles. Gentle surfactants dissolve residue without stripping, while botanical actives help soften and release buildup, so the scalp feels clean and renewed. Ingredients such as willowherb, peptides, and saw palmetto help balance the scalp, reduce congestion, and support circulation. Scalp exfoliation creates the ideal foundation for healthier hair across all textures and routines.  How Hydrating and Strengthening the Scalp Improves Shine and Reduces Breakage  Once the scalp and follicles are exfoliated, hydration becomes essential. Like the skin on your face, your scalp needs consistent moisture to stay balanced and resilient. JOUSSE  Condition delivers lightweight hydration to the scalp while softening the hair fiber with keratin amino acids, Vitamin B5, and rice and wheat proteins. These ingredients support elasticity, shine, and strength while helping reduce breakage and dryness. Hydration also helps calm sensitivity and maintain the scalp’s natural barrier. With consistent moisture, the scalp stays healthier and better equipped for your styling routine.  A Simple Scalp First Routine for Better Hair Days  A scalp-first haircare routine is the most effective way to support long-term hair health and daily styling. An exfoliating shampoo like JOUSSE  Cleanse exfoliates and balances the scalp, and a hydrating conditioner like JOUSSE Condition nourishes the scalp and softens your strands. Between washes, refresh your roots with STRATOSPHERE Revive Powder, our scalp-friendly dry shampoo that absorbs oil with scalp-friendly ingredients. This routine works for every hair type, including curly, fine, dry, or thinning hair. When the scalp is supported from the start, follicles feel fortified and hair becomes softer, fuller looking, and easier to style.  Build Your Scalp-First Routine Explore the products featured in this post: • JOUSSE Cleanse Exfoliating Shampoo• JOUSSE Condition Hydrating Conditioner• STRATOSPHERE Revive Powder

What Size Heated Round Brush Should I Use?

by Calista Tools on Feb 02 2026
Not all heated round brushes are created equal; some get too hot, others are prone to tugging or tangling, and many leave you with more frizz than smooth finish. The Perfecter Heated Round Brush was designed for easy styling and beautiful hair. With five adjustable heat settings, four barrel sizes for every hair length, and patented fusion technology, it smooths, lifts, and adds shine with every turn — all without clamping, creasing, or damaging your hair.  Whether you want to flip, bevel, wave, curl, straighten, or add voluminous lift, the Perfecter makes it easy to create a variety of styles across hair types and textures. It’s safe on color-treated and silver hair, and can even be used close to the scalp and face without burning, thanks to the heat-resistant top quality nylon teeth.   So how do you pick the right size Perfecter Heated Round Brush? This guide breaks it down clearly by hair length and styling goals, so you can get the best results from the Perfecter that suits your style.  Understanding Heated Round Brush Sizes  Perfecter Heated Round Brush sizing is based on the diameter of the ionic ceramic barrel, not the outer bristles. Smaller barrel sizes create tighter curls and more precision, while larger barrels deliver looser waves and softer movement. The Perfecter is available in four sizes: 0.5", 0.75", 1", and 1.5", and features five temperature settings so you can customize heat based on your hair type and styling needs.  Protective nylon teeth gently guide hair and hold it to the barrel without harsh clamping or creasing, allowing you to style close to the scalp or hairline for added lift and shine, without burning your skin or compromising hair health.  Heated Round Brush for Short Hair  Short hair requires precision, especially around the ears, neckline, and bangs. The 0.5” Perfecter is ideal for pixies and cropped styles, offering control without the risk of burns thanks to its cool-touch nylon teeth. For chin-length bobs or layered cuts that sit on the neck, the 0.75” Perfecter helps add root lift and natural movement through the ends. Both the 0.5” and 0.75” barrel sizes work beautifully on short hair, allowing for versatile styling, definition, and shape.  Heated Round Brush for Medium-Length Hair  For shoulder-length cuts, lobs, and medium layers, the Perfecter offers two options depending on your hair type and desired style. The 0.75” barrel is great for tighter waves, curls, added lift, and a more defined shape, especially if you have finer hair. The 1.0” Perfecter is our most versatile and bestselling size, delivering slightly looser curls, lifted volume at the crown, and added shine through mid-lengths. With consistent heat and perfectly aligned, cool-touch teeth, the .75” and 1” Perfecter sizes help tame frizz and polish your look without the damage of traditional hot tools.  Heated Round Brush for Long Hair  Long hair benefits from larger heated round brushes that smooth and shape without creating tight curls. The 1.5” Perfecter is designed to create loose, bouncy volume while reducing fuzziness and enhancing shine. It helps longer styles look polished, healthy, and full of movement. Whether you want to add lived-in curls, smooth frizz, or shape waves, the 1.5” Perfecter gives you the ease and control to do it, all while enhancing shine. And if you’re looking for a more defined curl pattern or more movement in long layers, the bestselling 1.0” Perfecter is a great alternative to get a bouncier look, without the damage of traditional hot tools.   Final Takeaways  While many heated round brushes fall short, the Perfecter is thoughtfully designed with precision sizing, longer barrels to catch more hair, and fusion technology that smooths and adds shine with every turn.  When choosing a heated round brush, start with your hair length, then consider your styling goals. Smaller sizes give tighter curls and closer crown lift. Larger sizes create lived-in curls and quicker, smoother styling for long hair. The Perfecter Heated Round Brush is designed for all hair types, with five heat settings, perfectly aligned cool-touch teeth, and fusion technology adds effortless shine on every hair type and texture.   Whether you’re curling, smoothing, waving, straightening, or adding life back to second-day hair, there’s a Perfecter Heated Round Brush that can help you style with confidence.

Best Travel Hair Products and Styling Tools to Pack

by Calista Tools on Oct 30 2025
Pack Smarter for Great Hair Anywhere  Traveling doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your hair routine. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a dream vacation, packing the right essentials can make styling simple and stress-free. The best travel hair products and tools are compact, multitasking, and TSA-approved, helping you look and feel polished from wheels-up to check-in.  At Calista, we believe beauty should fit into your lifestyle, not the other way around. Here’s how to pack a streamlined hair kit that works wherever your itinerary takes you, so you can focus less on frizz and more on the fun.  Pack for the Process, Not Just the Style  When it comes to maintaining healthy, beautiful hair while traveling, packing for the process makes all the difference. Think about your haircare routine from start to finish, and how each step might be affected by a new environment. From long flights that leave your strands feeling dry or flat, to hotel water quality and shifting humidity levels, your hair faces new challenges in every location.  That’s why versatility is key. Your plans might change by the hour, and your hair should be able to keep up. One day might call for air-dried texture; the next, sleek waves for a night out. By bringing travel-friendly hair essentials that support your process, you’ll be ready for anything.  Choose Compact Tools That Pull Double Duty  Instead of juggling multiple hot tools for different looks, opt for multitasking, lightweight essentials that let you style with ease, no matter where you're headed.  The Calista GoGo Mini Hair Dryer is one of those tools you'll reach for again and again. At 1,000 watts, it delivers full-size power in a compact, carry-on–friendly design. It features two speed settings, a concentrator attachment for targeted drying, and a foldable handle that makes it easy to tuck into any bag.  Once your hair is dry, the GoGo Mini Round Brush steps in to style, smooth, or add a little extra lift. It heats up quickly to 365°F and works wonders for waves, volume, or taming frizz on the fly. Thanks to its Fusion Technology, every pass adds shine while keeping your hair looking healthy. Bonus: it’s dual voltage, so it’s ready for international adventures, while the hair dryer is best suited for U.S. use.  Together, these mini must-haves give you the freedom to create your favorite styles without weighing down your suitcase. Wherever you're off to, you'll have everything you need to look put-together without packing your entire vanity.  How to Pack Hair Products for Air Travel  Meet your new travel must-have: the Mini Embellish Texturizing Foam (2 oz). Calista’s first travel-size styling product features our signature EMBELLISH Fiber Technology in a petite, carry-on-friendly pump bottle. This lightweight foam adds instant volume, touchable texture, and flexible hold, all while meeting TSA size limits. Whether you’re blow-drying for lift or air-drying for natural texture, this mini delivers effortless, healthy-looking volume anywhere your travels take you.  When it comes to packing the rest of your haircare routine, it’s all about having the right containers to take your styling favorites wherever you go. The Calista Refillable Travel Bottle Set makes it simple to bring your Jousse Cleanse & Condition and other styling essentials on the road in leak-proof, TSA-approved bottles that keep your routine consistent from home to hotel.  When filling your travel bottles, leave a little space at the top; cabin pressure can cause liquids to expand during flights. The complete set includes two spray bottles, two pump bottles, and one capped bottle, giving you flexible options to pair with your Mini Embellish Foam and keep your entire routine travel-ready.  Smart Travel Haircare Essentials for Every Destination  Once your tools are packed, it’s the little extras that make all the difference when you’re getting ready on the go. Whether you’re jet-lagged at the hotel, fresh from a swim, or heading out after a day of exploring, a few smart essentials help keep your routine easy and your hair looking its best.  The Duet Twist Towel is ideal for post-shower or poolside drying, with microfiber and satin sides that work together to absorb moisture while protecting strands from friction, much gentler than heavy hotel towels.  For quick touchups or detangling between excursions, the Smoothie Mini Brush is a compact essential that glides through knots without tugging. To refresh oily roots and add lift on the go, STRATOSPHERE Revive Powder delivers oil absorption, volume, and soft texture in a travel-friendly, non-aerosol formula. And lastly, to set your style, Mini EMBELLISH Flex Spray provides flexible hold without stiffness, keeping hair polished and touchable wherever the day takes you. These travel-ready staples are designed to fit easily into your carry-on, and into your day, so you can feel confident wherever you land. More mini Calista styling favorites are coming soon, so stay tuned!

How to Repair Damaged Hair: The Ingredients That Actually Work

by Calista Tools on Oct 22 2025
Why Hair Gets Damaged (and How to Fix It)  If your hair has been feeling a little drier, frizzier, or harder to style than usual, it could be a sign that your strands need a little extra support. From heat styling and color treatments to everyday wear and tear, hair naturally experiences stress and damage over time, and with the right care, you can help restore its strength and shine.  While one curling session or updo won’t cause lasting harm, repeated stress over time can break down your hair’s natural structure, resulting in hair that feels rough, frizzy, and prone to breakage.  The good news: damaged hair can be repaired. Once you understand what causes damage and which ingredients actually rebuild the hair from within, you can start giving your strands the support they need to recover strength, shine, and softness. Understand What Your Hair Needs to Heal  Healthy hair has a strong outer layer (the cuticle) that keeps moisture locked in and protects the inner structure. Damage lifts or cracks the cuticle, causing protein and hydration loss. Repairing that means replacing what’s missing: protein to strengthen, moisture to smooth and soften, and protection to prevent future damage.  By using formulas with the right balance of these ingredients, you can restore your hair’s integrity over time and help it resist future stress.  Strengthening Ingredients  When hair becomes brittle, it’s usually because the cuticle has been weakened by heat or chemical processing. Strengthening ingredients help rebuild the internal structure and restore resilience.  Amino Acids & Proteins – These building blocks of hair help fill in weak spots, improving elasticity and reducing breakage. Biotin – Supports keratin production for stronger strands and less shedding. Antioxidants – Protect against oxidative stress that can further weaken hair.  Try this: Calista’s Jousse Styling Elixir blends Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein and Hydrolyzed Collagen to fortify the cuticle while adding body and bounce. For an extra boost, Stratosphere Bounce Cream combines silica and biotin to enhance elasticity and help prevent future breakage, so hair feels stronger, with no stiffness.    Moisturizing Ingredients  Dryness is one of the earliest and most visible signs of damage. Once the cuticle lifts, moisture escapes quickly, leaving hair rough and frizzy. Rehydrating your strands requires humectants and emollients that draw in and lock down moisture.  Lightweight Oils (like argan or jojoba) smooth the surface and add shine. Fatty Acids help replenish the lipid layer for softness and flexibility. Humectants such as glycerin attract moisture from the air for lasting hydration.  Try this: GLOSS Shine Serum seals in nourishment with conditioning oils and esters that leave hair smooth, sleek, and shiny. For a lightweight, flexible moisturizer, Embellish Styling Cream blends botanical emollients and flexible polymers that hydrate while taming frizz, ideal for daily use on wet or dry hair.    Protective Ingredients  Repair means more than just restoring what’s lost, it also involves preventing new damage. Environmental stressors like UV rays, pollution, and heat styling silently chip away at your hair’s health every day.  Protective ingredients create a lightweight shield that helps your hair stay smooth, strong, and vibrant.  UV Filters & Antioxidants defend color and proteins from sun and pollution. Amino Acid Complexes strengthen the cuticle against mechanical stress. Heat Protectants buffer hair from high temperatures during styling.  Try this: Jousse Vitality Spray acts as a daily defense system. A blend of amino acids and botanicals forms a breathable barrier that helps guard against UV exposure, heat damage, and moisture loss, perfect for your first line of defense after every wash.    Everyday Habits That Help Hair Recover  Even the best products can only go so far if your daily routine continues to cause stress. Simple swaps can help protect your progress and prevent new damage from forming:  Swap rough towels for the DUET Twist Towel, which absorbs moisture without pulling or frizzing. Use the SMOOTHIE Brush to detangle gently and prevent breakage. Sleep on a satin pillowcase to minimize friction overnight.  Repairing damaged hair starts with replenishing what’s been lost: protein, moisture, and protection. With consistent care and the right Calista essentials, your hair can stay strong, resilient, and beautiful throughout every season, style, and color.

Introducing GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum: The Hair Serum for Shine, Strength, and Style

by Calista Tools on Oct 13 2025
What Is Hair Serum and Why Does It Matter?  Shiny, healthy hair never goes out of style, but maintaining that glossy finish can be tricky. Heat styling, chemical treatments, UV exposure, aging, and even certain medications can throw hair ph balance off, leaving hair dry, frizzy, and dull.  A hair serum is one simple way to quickly restore softness and shine. By smoothing and sealing the cuticle, it helps protect your strands and bring back a luminous, healthy look with every application.  That’s why I’m so excited about our new GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum. It’s lightweight, nourishing, and easy to use, giving you the benefits of an oil and a treatment without heaviness or residue. Whether you’re finishing a sleek blowout or reviving second-day hair, this serum gives your style a luminous, healthy finish every time. Key Ingredients that Make A Difference  Many serums rely on heavy oils that can feel greasy or weigh hair down. GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum was formulated differently:  Soybean Oil + Argan Oil – Lightweight yet nourishing, these oils hydrate, soften, and control frizz without leaving greasy or heavy residue.  Vitamin E – Protects against dryness, UV, and heat damage while supporting healthier strands.  Corn Oil, Carrot Root Extract & Beta-Carotene – Provide antioxidant support to strengthen and protect hair.  Lightweight shine-enhancing emollients – Seal the cuticle and give that glossy, reflective finish.  How To Use GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum  A little goes a long way with GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum. Start with a pea-sized drop in your palm, rub it between your hands, and work through damp hair from mid-lengths to ends. Comb through for even distribution, then continue with your styling routine. You can also smooth a drop over dry hair to tame flyaways, polish ends, or to hydrate curls and add extra definition. The serum’s lightweight formula layers easily with other stylers and protectants without buildup, just be sure to apply slowly and evenly until you find the right amount for your hair.  Tips for Different Hair Types  Fine hair: Stick with a pea-sized drop, focusing on mid-shaft and ends to keep hair light and airy.  Thick or coarse hair: Layer 2–3 drops, adding one at a time and distributing throughout for softness and frizz control.  Curly or wavy hair: Scrunch into damp waves or curls to reduce frizz, define shape, and boost shine.  Second-day hair: Smooth a drop into dry ends to revive your style, then lightly glide hands over the surface to tame flyaways.  Experience GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum Today  High shine is a visible sign of hair health. With GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum, you get more than just a glossy finish; you get restorative care that strengthens hair while it smooths. Its lightweight formula protects against everyday stressors, tames frizz, and revives softness so your hair looks and feels its best. Available exclusively here on our website, GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum is the perfect daily essential to keep your hair polished, silky, and full of healthy shine.  Get GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum

Trending Fall 2025 Hair Looks: Colors, Cuts, and Styling Inspiration

by Maria McCool on Sep 30 2025
Fall is one of my favorite times in the salon. There’s something about the change in season that makes people ready for a little refresh, whether it’s softening their cut, adding new dimension to their color, or playing with a different styling routine. This fall, it’s all about versatility, movement, and expression. From rich shades that feel expensive yet effortless, to cuts that can easily transform from classic to edgy, the possibilities are endless. Here’s what I’m loving for Fall 2025, along with a few Calista favorites that help you bring the looks home. Fall 2025 Hair Colors That Are Taking Over  This season’s colors are rich, dimensional, and full of warmth. Strawberry and honey blondes are still in demand, while brunettes are leaning deeper into glossy mocha and espresso shades, often paired with highlights or lowlights for added depth. Copper, cinnamon, and auburn tones are also having a big moment, bring rich warmth to fall hair.  Of course, the secret to lasting, vibrant color is keeping hair healthy. Weekly treatments like the JOUSSE Mend Mask strengthen and hydrate so strands stay soft and salon-fresh. And after every wash, a light mist of JOUSSE Vitality Spray helps detangle, adds shine, and protects against heat and UV, so your color holds onto that depth and radiance all season long. The Top Haircuts Defining Fall 2025  Cuts this fall are softer, more playful, and easily adaptable. I’m seeing bobs with airy texture, shaggy layers with lots of movement, and the “bixie” (that fun pixie-bob hybrid) holding strong. For longer hair, the butterfly cut, with face-framing layers, is everywhere, along with bangs of all kinds: breezy curtain bangs, wispy fringes, and bold, blunt statements.  What excites me most is how versatile these cuts are. With just a few styling tweaks, you can go from sleek and dramatic to undone and effortless. To keep those fresh layers looking their best, I recommend JOUSSE Cleanse & Condition, infused with keratin that strengthens strands and botanicals that nourish, leaving hair soft, healthy, and ready for styling. Styling Inspiration for the Season When it comes to styling, adaptability and self-expression are leading the way. On the sleek side, red carpets are full of slicked-back looks and glossy flipped ends. For a softer take, a healthy, high-shine finish is always in style; this is where GLOSS Shine Recovery Serum comes in. It nourishes while adding smoothness, shine, and frizz control for that polished, radiant look.  On the other end, volume is bigger than ever. Fluffy, bouncy curls (a favorite among celebs and influencers) are simple with the Ion Hot Rollers, while tousled, lived-in texture continues to trend on runways and can be beautifully supported with soft touch hold from Embellish FLEX Spray.  However you wear it, styling this season is about versatility, and Calista's Perfecter Pro offers endless styling options. You can use it to add lift at the roots, smooth your hair straight, or add soft curls, and in just a few minutes, your whole look is transformed. With the right cut, tools, and products, you can shift your look effortlessly between polished and playful styles. How to Bring Fall Hair Trends Into Your Everyday Routine What I love most about this season’s trends is how approachable they are. My clients light up when they realize they don’t have to stick to just one “signature” look. One day it’s sleek and shiny, the next it’s big curls, and the day after it’s undone and textured. That’s the beauty of hair: it’s personal, expressive, and fun. With Calista’s lineup of products, tools, and tutorials, you’ve got everything you need to explore new looks, nourish your hair, and feel confident trying something new this fall.  Happy Fall Styling!

Maria McCool Answers Your Travel Hair Questions

by Calista Tools on Aug 22 2025
Calling all travelers! Hair on the go is one of the topics we are most passionate about here at Calista. We believe that great hair should be accessible anytime, any place – we even created a specialty line of tools specific to travel (GoGos anyone?)! Today, we’re picking the brain of our fabulous founder and expert on all things hair, Maria McCool, and answering all of your travel hair questions! Q: How can different climates (humidity, dry air, cold weather) affect hair while traveling? Maria: Weather always plays a role in how your hair behaves. Dealing with humidity will lead to hair that’s harder to manage, causing curls to frizz and straight hair to fall even flatter. Dry weather can often lead to breakage, as the lack of moisture in the air enhances the weakening of hair strands. While you can do your best to prepare for the weather in your destination of choice, you can’t always predict how the air will impact your hair. Pack styling products that you know work well with your hair type and be prepared to embrace your natural look as much as possible. Q: What are the best travel-friendly haircare essentials to pack? Maria: In my opinion, it’s best to have travel bottles and always ensure you can bring your favorite products. When you’re in a different location, you’re changing up all the elements of your standard routine. From the weather to the water to the air, everything is different and will impact the way your hair behaves. Travel bottles make it so easy to pack your own essentials so that you can keep your routine a little more consistent even when all of the surrounding elements are different. Q: How can travelers prevent frizz and dryness in unfamiliar environments? Maria: I love a frizz-taming serum to add some moisture back into the hair and smooth out your strands. I also think it’s great to have creams or sprays that block out humidity and offer sun protection for your hair as well. With dry air, you’re always seeking to add moisture back into your hair, so just be prepared by having the right products on hand. Q: What are some easy, low-maintenance hairstyles for travel days? Maria: My best advice with this one is to just go with what you've got! If you have curly hair, bring the products that highlight your curls. If you have straight hair, keep it sleek and work in a fun up-do or hair accessory. When it comes to keeping hair low maintenance, you’re always putting yourself in a better position by embracing your natural look. Q: How can hard water or hotel water affect hair, and what are quick solutions? Maria: The big issue with hard water is that it strips your hair of its natural oils, which can lead to dullness and dryness. The best solution here is to bring along your favorite hydrating conditioner and add in a great hair mask for extra moisture replenishment. Calista’s Jousse Mend Mask is a great option for bringing that hydration back into your hair - it deeply penetrates the hair strands and you only need a little bit to make a big impact on the look and feel of your hair. Q: Are there any multi-purpose hair products that work well for travel (e.g., leave-in conditioner, dry shampoo)? Maria: My favorite is Calista Embellish Styling Cream. This is a product that does everything you could possibly want your hair to do. It controls frizz, it adds shine, and it creates a nice fullness effect and brings out your natural volume and texture. It also blocks humidity and protects against breakage that you might experience in some of these drier climates. Best of all, it’s formulated with Vitamin E and argan oil to actively fortify and protect your hair. I do not travel without it in my bag! 3 Ways to Make a Subtle Hair Color Change

by Calista Tools on Aug 08 2025
Thinking about making a change to your color? At Calista, we’re all about a BeautyBrave moment, but here’s the thing about being BeautyBrave: it doesn’t always have to be a seismic shift. Sometimes, it’s all about subtlety. We know that change is hard, no matter the impact, so we like to celebrate the small shifts just as much as the big transformations. Today, we’re talking about 3 ways you can make a hair color change that leans more subtle. For our gals who aren’t as interested in a major shift – check out these 3 ideas! Subtle Balayage Balayage means “to sweep” in French. Gorgeous, isn’t it? It’s a freestyle dying technique in which hair is highlighted to look more sun-kissed, less brightly highlighted. This style can make a subtle yet meaningful impact while giving you a little push toward boldness and incorporating some color into your look. And best of all, it’s a very low maintenance color change! Requiring minimal touchups, these subtle, simple highlights will grow out as your grows, leaving behind a trace of color on your ends that is equal parts beachy and chic. Babylights Sweet as can be and easy to maintain, we’d like to introduce you to babylights. Babylights are incredibly thin highlights that are precisely weaved in and out of the hair to create small tonal shifts in your base color. If you’ve always thought highlights might look good on you but have been afraid to take the plunge, or if you think that there’s a hair color that might flatter you more than your current one, babylights are a great way to try something out without a whole lot of risk. Ombre This may be the most unsubtle of the three color changes and it definitely had its peak popularity a few years ago, but the style itself holds up in terms of a slight color change with a big impact. Drawing from ’70s style icons, ombre looks feature a solid root with grown-in, sun-kissed blonde highlights weaved throughout the mid-lengths and ends. While the effect of an ombre may seem similar to a balayage, the technique is what sets them apart. Balayage is a free-hand painting technique that creates a more natural, sun-kissed look while ombre is a gradient color effect where the hair transitions from a darker root to a lighter end. When it comes to this type of look, less is definitely more if you want to maintain that simple, subtle aesthetic.   Planning on making a hair color change this summer? Let us know in the comments!

Maria McCool Answers Your Questions for Hair Over 50

by Calista Tools on Jul 11 2025
Aging hair is a topic we’re very passionate about at Calista. That’s why we asked our amazing founder and hair expert, Maria McCool, to give us answers to all of your questions about 50+ hair. Today, she’s breaking down the best short hairstyles for older women, how to style your thinning hair, and which styling tools to use and avoid. Let’s get into it! Q: What are the best short hairstyles for older women? What are the best ways to achieve those hairstyles? Maria: I don’t like to box my clients into a length. Instead, I like to assess their hair and then suggest whatever allows the hair to look its most youthful. If you have thinning hair as you age, I might suggest a super-short cut or a pixie to enhance the body and texture. If your hair is looking healthy at the crown but coarse or dry at the ends, something shoulder-length or a blunt bob will make you look more on-trend and current. If your hair is healthy and strong, I say grow it as long as you want! Q: What are the best hairstyles for women over 50 with thin hair? Maria: A good rule of thumb with thinner hair is to keep it at or above your shoulders and don’t add too many layers. Q: What hair styling tools should every older woman have in her arsenal? Maria: A heated round brush with a non-metal barrel like the Calista Perfecter is a must-have for styling older hair. A heated round brush lets you add volume, flips, or curls that give hair a fuller and more modern feel while ensuring you’re using safe, healthy heat that isn’t damaging already fragile strands. Q: Are there any hair styling tools older women with fine hair should avoid? Maria: Old school curling irons! They damage the hair and give you a dated look. There are so many better options out there! Do you have any specific hair questions you’d like answered on the blog? Let us know in the comments!

That’s why we wanted to take a moment to appreciate those springy ringlets and talk about our favorite Calista curl products! Today, we’re breaking down three of our best curly-girl styling products and giving you the lowdown on how to use them to better accentuate your curls. No heat styling necessary – just easy-to-use styling products that will keep your hair healthy and happy! Let’s get curly! Embellish Texturizing Foam A post-shower hair treatment that infuses volume into your strands, Embellish Texturizing Foam is incredible for accentuating natural texture. It gives all damp hair a head start before you even reach for the hairdryer, but it’s particularly effective for curly haired gals. Formulated with nutrients and minerals, it brings a little life to your hair and sets the stage for frizz-free, texturized volume. One reviewer said “Perfect for shaping your curls and leaving them with movement and shine. I recommend this wonderful product to always have hydrated curls and beautiful styles.” While another remarked “I put it on my hair when my hair is just damp and it holds my natural curls in place! It smells amazing and doesn't leave that crunchy flaky feeling.” That’s what we love to hear!! Stratosphere Bounce Cream The lightest of our three curly-hair suggestions, Stratosphere Bounce Cream is a lightweight, wet-hair styling fluff that creates sky-high volume and spring-back bounce. Created with a cloud-like texture, this product turns into velvety styling cream when rubbed into hands and leaves fair feeling light and frizz-free. Formulated with oxygen for an ultra-buoyant feel, this styling product is great at removing the frizz from your curls while bringing out natural texture of all kinds. According to our customer reviews, “I'm shocked at how great this product made my curls look! Not only did it help with the volume but it also tamed the frizz and it lasted throughout a very humid day!” and for our more wavy haired gals, “Brings out my natural beachy waves and adds volume that makes my hair feel so much lighter and lifted.” We love a versatile product! Jousse Styling Elixir Last but definitely not least, it’s our 3-in-1 special: Jousse Styling Elixir. Created with naturally-derived ingredients that encourage healthy hair, this product offers a 3-in-1 hybrid formula with the smoothing nature of a cream, the control and hold of a gel, and the texturizing and plumping properties of a mousse. Formulated with hydrolyzed wheat protein that strengthens the hair shaft to prevent breakage and collagen encourages thicker, fuller hair, this handy styling product fits right in with our hair-healthy Jousse line and will leave your hair feeling volumized, held, and styled. One customer said, “My curls look more defined, frizz-free, and have a natural bounce. It also adds a nice shine without weighing my hair down.” While another kept it simple with “I absolutely love how this product enhances my natural curls!” Two comments we love getting! Easy Tips for Moms to Speed Up Their Hair Routines

by Calista Tools on Jun 13 2025
Let’s face it, being a mom is a lot of work! From caring for your infant through the baby stage to chauffeuring your kids to and from activities as they get older, it’s a full time job that often doesn’t leave you with a lot of extra time. Often, one of the first things to go when we lose time for ourselves is the time we take for our own self-care – that includes our hair! Today, Maria McCool is giving 3 easy tips that can help moms speed up their hair routines and make the most of those few moments of free time. Don’t Underestimate Air Drying Maria: I always think that letting your hair air dry is one of the easiest ways to simplify the styling process. Take a shower at night, use a volumizing product, like Calista Embellish Texturizing Foam, or smoothing styling cream, like Embellish Styling Cream, and let your hair dry naturally. In the morning, skip the blow dry and use a heated round brush like the Calista FAUXblo for a better, faster blowout. Change Your Part Maria: For new moms who are experiencing hormonal hair loss, a great hack is to move your part to the center. Part your hair in the middle and then slick your front pieces down behind your ears to cover any thinning spots. From there, bring the rest of your hair to the front or tie it up in a top knot or ponytail. Don’t Be Afraid of the Mom Chop Maria: The mom chop gets a bad rap sometimes, but the truth is, every inch you take off your hair can save you 5 minutes of styling time in the morning. Even if you only take off 3 inches, that’s 15 minutes back (which as a mom, is huge)! Blunt chops are very in right now, so getting a bob or a lob is an easy, fashionable cut that will also help you cut on down on styling time. What are your favorite styling tips for a speedy routine? 4 Tips for Limiting Hair Loss

4 Tips for Limiting Hair Loss

by Calista Tools on May 30 2025
Hair loss is one of the tougher hair challenges to deal with, especially as a woman. Therea are many factors that can contribute to hair loss. From aging and childbirth to stress and other outside forces, often, this challenge is difficult to predict and even more difficult to deal with. Today, we’re talking about some of the ways you can limit hair loss. Whether that comes down to choosing the right products and looking more closely at ingredients or making small adjustments in your lifestyle and opting for styling tips that add a little fullness back into your look, we want to provide our  customers with a range of options that can help them deal with this life change. Pay Attention to Ingredients Chemicals like minoxidil are widely known to slow the rate of hair loss, but there are also vitamins and naturally-derived ingredients that can help with thinning hair as well. Biotin is a well-known B-vitamin that helps with hair loss. Natural ingredients like saw palmetto and castor oil have also been used to combat thinning hair. Saw palmetto acts as a natural DHT blocker, which is the main hormone linked to hair loss. In actively fighting this hormone, it’s setting the stage for stronger strands and faster growth. Vitamin B is also an ingredient to look out for when it comes to stimulating new growth. Because Vitamin B is known to increase microcirculation in the scalp, it promotes blood flow, enhances nutrient uptake, and in turn, strengthens the hair strands for less hair loss. Use the Right Products Calista Jousse Cleanse & Condition is packed with fortifying, naturally-derived ingredients, as well as vitamins and minerals. Formulated with saw palmetto, willow herb, quinoa extract, olive leaf extract, Vitamin B complex, etc. All of these ingredients help moisturize the scalp, nourish the hair follicles, and promote healthier, shinier hair. Maria’s Tip: “I really believe that it shouldn’t come down to one product, but that if you’re really committed to tackling hair loss, it should be about putting a system in place. I’d say change up your shampoo & conditioner to ensure you’re employing ingredients that promote healthier hair and stronger growth. Add in a hair serum or spray that will help fight hair loss. Look into any of the great ingestible supplements on the market that you can take daily to thicken and strengthen your hair. Check in with yourself and your lifestyle and see if there are any healthy changes that you could make. If you’re really trying to address the problem of hair thinning, go at it from all angles.” Make Lifestyle Changes When it comes to hair loss, diet, exercise, and limiting stress can play a huge role. As far as standard hair loss goes, we suggest taking a look at your lifestyle and seeing if there are any changes that could be made for an overall healthier approach. That being said, we would always recommend someone consult their doctor if they feel they are losing hair at an unprecedented rate or if other personal health issues are at the root of increased hair loss. Give the Look of Fullness From an aesthetic point of view, hair loss can be visually combatted by using volumizing products. For example, our Embellish Line uses fiber technology that actually adheres to your hair strands, helping the hair to appear thicker and more filled out. It includes a styling paste, styling foam, hairspray, and root covering powder in a wide range of colors, all of which have this special formulation and help people feel more comfortable with their thinning hair! Your hair will look and feel fuller and thicker with each use. Do you have any great hair loss tips? Let us know in the comments!

Maria McCool Answers Your Dry Hair Questions

by Calista Tools on May 02 2025
Have you ever wondered why your hair gets dry? Maybe what the signs of dry hair might be? And most importantly, have you ever wanted to get some solutions? If you suffer with hair that lacks hydration or easily dries out with weather changes, today is your day on the BeautyBrave Blog! We’re talking to Calista founder and hair expert, Maria McCool, about all things dry hair. Q: Why does our hair get dry? Maria: There are so many factors! Some of the major reasons are excessive heat styling, overexposure to the sun, or chemical processing damage. I’d also add that the lack of moisture in the air during winter and too much time in the ocean or pool during summer definitely dry out hair as well! Q: How can I tell if I have dry hair? Maria: Dry hair is generally dull and lifeless. It doesn’t perform or hold the styles you want and breaks easily. Another sign is having a lot of static in your hair from the lack of hydration. Q: What are the negative results of having dry hair? Maria: With dry hair, you’re not able to achieve the looks that you want like holding a curl or smoothing frizz. You’ll also notice a lot of split ends and breakage. Q: What are some affordable solutions for dry hair? (Hacks are good too) Maria: A great hack is to use olive oil at night and then shampoo in the morning. Some affordable product solutions are using a hydrating shampoo or a rich hair mask regularly. Most importantly, always make sure you use heat protectant before styling with hot tools! Q: What are 3-4 ways to prevent dry hair in the first place? Maria: Don’t overdo heat styling. Use a product that has protects hair from UV rays. Condition regularly! Use a hair mask 2-4 times per month during dry seasons. 3 Types of Bangs and How to Style Them

by Calista Tools on Apr 18 2025
Bangs, bangs, bangs! A classic look that never goes out of style, we love this old standby for adding a new facet to your look or creating a whole new vibe with one simple change. Today, we’re talking about 3 different types of bangs and our favorite ways to style them. Whether you like to keep it classic or go for a trendier vibe, we’ve got you covered – let’s get into it! Classic Bangs The Look Timeless, simple, and often quite elegant, classic bangs are exactly what you picture when you think of the term “bangs.” Classic Bangs typically go straight across the forehead and fall just above the brow line. Working nicely with a wide range of hairstyles and textures, classic bangs will truly never go out of style.  This style works well with a range of hair textures and face shapes, offering a fresh, flattering touch that’s versatile and easy to wear. How to Style If you like a cleaner look, style your bangs with a smooth and straight look that gives a completely polished aesthetic. Use a straightening brush like our GoGo Mini Detail Brush or Triangl Pro to really take the look to the next level. If you like a more lived-in feel, take your bangs to a messy yet elegant place with a bit of piecey texture. Use our O2 Texturizer Spray and some finger combing to add that effortless, playful look. Curly Bangs The Look You might think that bangs only work on straight hair, but that’s just not true! We love a moment when someone wants to embrace their natural curls and live out their BeautyBrave truth, and curly bangs are an amazing way to do just that! Totally playful and fun, curly bangs can be short and bouncy or longer and wispy – it all depends on the look you prefer. How to Style The best thing about curly bangs? They’re super low maintenance. If you’re looking for an easy way to embrace your texture and put your natural curl out there for all to see, use a curl-enhancing styling product (we love Embellish Texturizing Foam or Jousse Styling Elixir) to really set the look in place without losing any of those bouncy, beautiful ringlets. Curtain Bangs The Look If you’re someone who pays attention to hairstyle trends, you’ll know that curtain bangs had a big moment a few years back. The trend started because it’s a versatile choice that flatters many different face shapes and gives people who don’t want to go full-bang an option to play around with face-framing and create an exciting new look. Typically cut to part down the middle, curtain bangs sweep away from the face to offer chic framing and a lovely, effortless look. They tend to be a little longer and fall just below the cheekbones.  Your favorite 70s icons? They knew how to rock a curtain bang! How to Style The perfect way to add a little structure to your look without committing to a full fringe! We love to style curtain bangs away from the face for a soft, face-framing look. Try using your Perfecter Pro to gently curl the hair away from the face and add a dimensional element to your long look. Are you someone who loves your bangs? Let us know your favorite styling hacks in the comments!
What is a Hair Cuticle and Why Should You Protect It?

What is a Hair Cuticle and Why Should You Protect It?

by Calista Tools on Apr 04 2025
If you’ve dipped a toe in the haircare pool, you’ve definitely heard of the cuticle. No, not the ones the nail tech clips back for you – the ones that are part of your hair strands! That’s right, every single one of your hair strands has a shaft that is comprised of three layers: the medulla, the cortex, and the cuticle. Today, we’re talking about the outermost layer in charge of keeping the innermost parts of your hair safe, healthy, and shiny: the cuticle. What Is the Hair Cuticle? To keep it simple, the hair cuticle is the external layer of the hair shaft that protects the inner layers of the hair. It’s made of overlapping cells that vaguely resemble fish scales or roof shingles and is ultimately the first line of defense between your hair and anything threatening to compromise its overall health. Basically, when the hair cuticle is strong and healthy, that’s exactly the way your hair will look and feel. Signs of Damaged Hair Cuticles As we stated above, healthy cuticles are made up of thin layers of cells that overlap like fish scales or roof shingles. However, when the cuticle becomes damaged, these shingles open up and become sharp and uneven. Frizz, breakage, dryness, and split ends are all signs of an unhealthy or weakened hair cuticle. Too much heat exposure, frequent chemical processing, or poor grooming habits can all contribute to damaged cuticles, and ultimately, damaged hair strands that lead to overall faulty hair structure. Other factors like too cold weather and overly hot water can also damage the hair cuticle, causing them to open up and make hair susceptible to breakage or frizz. Caring for Your Hair Cuticles Sealing the hair cuticle is the best way to prevent long term damage. Luckily, there are a few simple ways to do this! Deep Conditioning Products Using products with Argan oil or other specialty hair oils can help maintain hair’s moisture and keep the cuticle sealed. A leave-in conditioner or other deep conditioning mask can also give hair necessary hydration and smoothness. Heat Protection Always use a heat protectant spray like Jousse Vitality Spray before styling with any heat styling tools to ensure your cuticle remains protected. Cool Water Rinse Finish up your shampoo routine with a cool rinse of water to properly seal the cuticle and lock in smoothness and shine When you think about a healthy hair cuticle, look for an individual hair strand that is uniformly smooth and thick from top to bottom. Think of your hair cuticle as the protector of your hair and make sure you take action to keep it safe, healthy, and strong! Want to know more about the properties of your hair strands? How to Curl Super Short Hair

by Calista Tools on Mar 21 2025
2
Who doesn’t love to add a little curl every now and then? These days, we’re flooded with visuals of young models with perfect beach waves or mature women who happen to have thick, flowing locks well into their 50s. These are often the visuals we’ve been conditioned to associate with hair that can handle a curl. However, there are so many styling hacks and simple solutions for curling short styles. From bobs to lobs to pixies, we’re giving you the guidance you need for adding curl to your super-short look. Round Brush Curls If you’ve read our blog about how to use the GoGo Mini Round Brush, you already know that styling with a round brush is an easy way to add volume and curls to your short hair. The key to creating curls that suit your length is ensuring you have the correct size tool. The round brush you use should have a barrel no larger than 1”. We recommend our GoGo or Perfecter Pro. Both tools feature bristles that gather the hair and help you create curls, waves, and lift in your short hair without exposing it to harsh heat from a traditional curling iron. To learn more about creating these looks, click here for a video tutorial. Rollers Rollers are a great way to add lift, definition, and volume to short styles. What’s great about this option is that you can choose whether or not you want to put heat on your hair. At Calista, we have two different types of roller sets: our Ion Hot Rollers and our Volumizing Soft-Grip Rollers. The Ion Hot Rollers come in a short set that features 6 Short Rollers (2.5" L x 1" W) and 6 Medium Rollers (2.5" L x 1.25" W). These heat up shortly and then can be placed in your hair for simple, hands-free styling. Check out our video tutorial here. When it comes to the Soft-Grip Rollers, you’re able to instill your hair with volume and lift without having to apply any heat whatsoever. Maria shows a client how to properly put in these rollers and add a styling product to set the look! Watch the video here. Styling Products Speaking of styling products…let’s talk creating curls with your natural texture. While this is heavily dependent on hair type (check out this blog post to see what your hair type is!), using the right styling product can highlight beautiful natural curls you may not even realize you have. Often, when hair is dried out or over-styled, it can look frizzy or overprocessed, making you want to avoid your natural texture. With a hydrating styling product that enhances your look, you might be able to take a natural wave pattern or texture and plump it up into a curl. Our favorites are Embellish Styling Cream, Stratosphere Texturizing Spray, and Embellish Texturizing Foam – but check out our whole line of styling products to see which might be right for you!
