What to Expect from Your Hair in Your 60s

by Calista Tools on Mar 07 2025
We’ve talked about what happens to your hair in your 50s, but the truth of the matter is, your hair is changing differently with each passing decade. Today, we’re talking hair changes you can expect in your 60s and the best ways to handle them. At Calista, we believe that aging hair should never stand in the way of embracing your beauty, so take these tips as a helpful guide for working with the changes as they come and continuing to love your BeautyBrave self! Why Do You Lose Hair as You Age? Before getting into the changes you’ll experience with the hair on your head in your 60s, we feel it’s important to note that hair loss is common with aging. This can be due to everything from DNA to thyroid issues (all of which should be handled by a medical professional). However, by the time we reach our 60s, our hair is spending less time in the growth phase and more time in the resting phase, meaning it not only grows a little more slowly, but also may not be able to grow as long as it could in years past. As you age, the hair follicles that were once thick will become thinner, lighter, and finer. Additionally, every time one of your hair follicles repeats the growth cycle, the hair that grows in may be a little weaker. This causes your hair to be more prone to breakage, preventing you from growing past a certain length. What Hair Changes Should You Expect as You Age? DENSITY The thickness of your hair is subject to change in your 60s. While in your 50s you can expect some thinning, your hair may really start to lack density as you move into your 60s. This has to do with the changing hair growth cycles, but also with your body’s natural oil production. As with anything else, our bodies produce less of these natural oils as we age. The decline in natural production results in hair that is less thick and strong. Ways To Work With The Change: Avoid excessive heat styling (and always use SAFE tools when you choose to heat style)! Go for a shorter style or layering that can give hair a fuller look. Use styling products that plump up strand and make hair appear thicker (we love Embellish Texturizing Foam for this)! MOISTURE Aging hair tends to lack the shine and body that it once had and can instead be replaced by brittle, dull strands with plenty of frizz and flyaways. This is because over time, our scalp produces less oil than in those younger years.  Those same oils that affect the density of your hair also keep the hair soft and smooth. Ways To Work With The Change: Avoid unsafe styling tools that further dry out your hair. Use hair serums or a hydrating hair mask to keep your hair hydrated. Use shampoos and conditioning products free of parabens and sulfates so your hair isn’t further stripped of its natural oils. TEXTURE You can also expect the texture of your hair to change in your 60s. The general appearance of your hair is becoming much more irregular. One hair may appear smooth and another has a strange kink to it. This is because your hair follicles often shrink with time, which affects the structure of your hair shaft. This can make it more difficult for hairstyles to last, can make curly hair fall flat, and even cause formerly straight hair to develop a little curl. Ways To Work With The Change: Use heat-safe styling tools that let you change up your style without compromising the integrity of your hair. Embrace your new texture and style to your strengths (texturize your curls, smooth your straight). Play around with styles that suit your new look (pixie cut, bob, layers, etc.)
4 Tips to Help with Thinning Hair

4 Tips to Help with Thinning Hair

by Calista Tools on Feb 21 2025

Dealing with thinning? Whether you're a new mom who's post-partum, a mature woman dealing with the affects of aging, or just can't seem to grow your hair past a certain length - thinning hair affects a wide range of women. While there can be many factors that cause hair to thin, today we're talking about a few simple, effective steps you can take to keep your hair looking full, shiny, and healthy. Choose Scalp-Fortifying Products Hair growth starts at the scalp. If you're not treating the skin and follicles around the hair strands, you can't expect your hair to improve. With this in mind, it's important that you use a shampoo & conditioner that focuses on scalp care and creates a healthy growing environment for the hair strands to flourish. We recommend our Jousse Line to jumpstart your hair growth journey. Avoid Tight Hairstyles A tight ponytail at the very top of the head, a chic ballerina bun that doesn't budge all day, an elaborate up-do that's held so firmly with hairspray and bobby pins that taking it down is a 5-step process. These may all seem like great ideas because they conceal the look of thin strands, but they're actually causing your hair more harm than good. Ditch the tight styles and aim for something more relaxed like a braid, a loose ponytail, or just letting your hair do its own beautifully-natural thing! Protect Against Heat From hot tools to sun exposure, heat can really take a toll on thinning hair. While it's important to protect against heat when using any hair styling tools, it's also important to choose the right tools! Calista creates hair tools with healthy heat, plain and simple. The ionic and ceramic fusion technology is made so that thinning, aging, and fragile hair strands remain safe and damage-free when creating amazing styles. Always, always, always ensure you're using healthy heat on your hair (especially if it's thinning)! To make things even safer, use a thermal spray to prevent damage from prolonged heat exposure. Our Jousse Vitality heat protectant spray actively safeguards your strands. Try Out Heatless Styling It's everywhere these days! Heat styling tools are becoming less popular because the damage they can cause to your hair is becoming more and more widely known. Even if you're using safe heat like that from Calista hair tools, sometimes your hair just needs a break. Try out heatless rollers, curl headbands, and styling products that bring out your natural texture. There are so many options today that you have your pick when it comes to finding a heatless hairstyling routine that works for you and your hair! Not sure where to start? Knowing your hair type is the first step to choosing products that work for you!

Valentine’s Hair Looks for All Hair Lengths

by Calista Tools on Feb 07 2025
The season of love is upon us and we couldn’t be more excited. Valentine or no valentine, any excuse to get dolled up and try out a new hairstyle is fine by us! Today, we’re talking 3 of our favorite Valentine’s looks for all hair lengths. Whether you have super short baby-fine hair, a cute bob or shoulder-length cut, or long locks with tons of volume, we’ve got a style that will suit your look (and most importantly, your cut). And we promise…you’ll absolutely LOVE them! A Lovingly Textured Pixie There’s nothing quite as effortless chic as a gently tousled pixie cut. Ideal for gals who don’t want to deal with a lot of styling, a slightly choppy pixie with piecey layers allows for a tousled, lived-in look that still feels cool and elegant.  Better yet, it’s never going to be a hairstyle that takes attention away from anything you’ve got going on makeup or outfit-wise. A chic pixie with full glam and a stunning red dress is just about as beautiful a V-Day look we can think of. How to Style It: Use a styling paste like Embellish Texturizing Definer to bring out your natural texture and create a subtle piecey look. A Romantic Tousled Bun Can’t go wrong with a classic! If you’ve got the length to do it, a low bun with a few hair pieces hanging down is a simple, tasteful way to keep it casual while still changing it up from your every day look. A tousled low bun gives a taste of playfulness without being over the top.  Depending on your length and hair density, you may even be able to get away with just using bobby pins to tuck the hair rather than using a hair tie – how simple is that! How to Style It: This will largely depend on the texture and length of your hair, but a surefire way to get that tousled look is to give your hair a bit of curl or volume before tucking it into a bun. We recommend using our Ion Hot Rollers or AirGlide Pro to get those loose waves in place. Set the style with Embellish Flex Spray so that you’re infusing hold while keeping the strands pliable for shaping. For something extra, add a little curl to the pieces you pull out to frame your face! A Heart-Clad Half-Up Twist At Calista, we love to keep it simple, but we also can’t help but feel like a holiday like Valentine’s Day calls for a little embellishment. Pull your hair into a half-up style (no matter how short! Maria always says that ladies with bobs often think this look isn’t for them, but that’s not true! A half-up look can work on many short cuts!) and add a little décor. Whether you put in a tasteful flower, a decorative clip, or a sparkly broach, we love the idea of giving your look a little something extra. How to Style It: We’ve got a super simple solution for this one: the FlipClip. Our newest hair accessory is perfect for adding a little ornamentation to your style (and it’s easy as can be)! You can even match your clip to your outfit for a more special tie-in. Adorable! How are you styling your hair this Valentine’s Day? Let us know in the comments!
Step-By-Step Styling with a Heated Round Brush

Step-By-Step Styling with a Heated Round Brush

by Calista Tools on Jan 24 2025

As Maria always says, “Using a heated round brush is like riding a bike – once you do it, you never forget!” The Perfecter Pro is one of our most beloved tools, but that doesn’t mean that using a heated round brush for the first time is easy. Fear not BeautyBraves, we’re breaking down all the ins and outs of using a heated round brush to curl, lift, and smooth your hair! The Basics First and foremost, throw all of your curling wand knowledge out the window. Using a round brush to curl is a completely different process and if you try to use it the same way you would a curling iron, you’ll end up with a tangled mess. Next, remember that this tool’s got teeth! A heated round brush is specifically made to style and brush through your hair so that you have a more natural-looking curl and less opportunities to burn or singe your hair. Because the bristles are hard, too much twisting too quickly will lead to the tool getting stuck and rolling up from the bottom of your hair or taking too big of a section can also lead to a tangle. Hair styling is a learning process so be patient with yourself and take your time! Adding Curls & Waves  To curl your hair with a heated round brush like our Perfecter Pro… Start by brushing through a strand that’s around 1-2 inches thick. Hold the Perfecter behind that strand and keep the tool vertical.  Place the top of your strand into the teeth at the top of the Perfecter and slowly turn the Perfecter back towards your head, allowing the teeth to comb through your hair as you turn.  Once you’ve made one full rotation, hold for 5 seconds and allow the curl to set. Continue this process as you move down your strand, keeping the tool vertical and turning it slowly as you go. Do this process on your whole head for chic, spiral curls! Creating Lift Getting lift with the Perfecter is dependent on your hair type. Typically, our clients love getting extra volume at the crown to make their hair look and feel a little fuller with a shorter style or a pixie cut. To get lift at the crown or root of your hair… Hold the Perfecter horizontally and place it directly under the strand at the root, draping the hair over the tool and into the teeth.  Hold for 10-15 seconds and then brush through for a little extra lift! Smoothing While the Perfecter can be used to create smooth styles, try the TrianglPro for a true straight and sleek look. To get a little smoothness with your heated round brush… Choose a section of hair and firmly hold the ends to create tension.  Place the Perfecter horizontally over top of the strand. Slowly glide down hair for a polished, sleek look! Have more questions about your heated round brush or other tools you’d like us to post about? Let us know in the comments!

The Hottest Hair Colors of 2025

by Calista Tools on Jan 10 2025

Calista founder and pro stylist, Maria McCool, is giving us the lowdown on the hottest hair colors of 2025. Read on to learn about the colors you can expect to see, the hair types that are best suited for these shades, and what we’re leaving behind in 2024! What You Can Expect to See More of  Warm and rich tones are on the rise. Ginger spice, mahogany, cherry red, dark espresso and Barbie blonde are a departure from the ash blondes and mushroom browns of years past. With these colors, you get dimension in a way that feels perfectly blended -  one color just melts into a lighter or a darker shade. An excellent colorist will effortlessly weave in those lighter tones with zero stark contrast. Who Should Choose These Colors? Ultimately, you want to talk to your colorist or the person who knows your hair best! When I give people color, I make sure to look at the tones that go with the client’s eyes and skin tone. This is what the best colorists do! Warmer tones can work on most people when done with the right amount of precision. Maybe a balayage or some highlights would suit you more than a full color change – it all comes down to what you and your colorist think is best! Which Color Trends are we Leaving Behind in 2024? Shades that lack dimension like overly icy blonde or flat brunette colors are going to be left in the dust in 2025. Really any super unnatural or stark shades of color will feel out of date and won’t jive with the new trend of natural blending and eye-catching color combinations. When it comes to hair in 2025, the main thing we should leave in the past is the fear of change!  New Year, New Hair!

Tools 101: The AirGlide Pro

If you’re a Calista fan, you know that we’re always upgrading our tools – especially the fan favorites! This past spring, we came out with our newest update: The AirGlide Pro Cool Breeze Styler. A new-and-improved version of the original AirGlide, the pro model was created to give you a new do-it-all tool to simplify your styling routine. About the Tool Curl, wave, smooth, and straighten with the AirGlide Pro. Upgraded from the original AirGlide, the pro model features snag-free floating plates that open wider to accommodate more hair and a one-touch button to control temperature and airflow. As always, you can depend on the signature Calista Fusion Technology that combines ionic and ceramic properties for less frizz and more shine. Why the Upgrade? Maria McCool was hearing from customers and clients alike about the things they loved (and didn’t love) about the original AirGlide. While the no-clamp plates were useful for some hair types, others found they didn’t open wide enough or hold enough hair at a time. While the cool air function worked for some, others found it to be too loud and not as effective as they’d hoped. Based off this feedback, Maria got to work with manufacturers to create a tool that kept the beloved features of the AirGlide, but gave the tool some necessary upgrades. With the Pro model, easy-open plates with spring-loaded button open up to 4” wider to accommodate more hair. Additionally, the combined Power + Cool Air Button with second-generation motor offers a stronger airflow with less noise. Customer Feedback At Calista, we’re always looking for ways to improve our tools and create a better customer experience. Here’s some of the feedback we’ve gotten on our latest upgrade! “I bought this updated version for myself even though my older model still worked and now I ordered the same one for my sister as a gift. She has Parkinson’s and with her tremors she tends to burn herself with regular curling irons. This one you can actually touch without burning yourself. I feel you can style your hair so much quicker. I love mine and I hope she will love hers too.” “I have the original but I like the new one better because it opens wider and makes it easier to use.” “This was so much easier to use than I expected! Fantastic design, comfortable to hold, and made my hair look pretty amazing with great volume.” Have you tried the AirGlide Pro? Let us know in the comments!

5 Holiday Hairstyles We Love This Year

by Calista Tools on Dec 06 2024
It’s holiday party season! Whether you’re attending a large gathering with friends or want to show off your style at the work holiday party, we’ve got the hair looks that will have you ho-ho-hoping for an excuse to try them out! Classic Blowout In today, in tomorrow, in yesterday – the blowout is here to stay. Whether you treat yourself to a salon excursion for some incredible volume and shine or you invest in a one-step hair tool that can give you that experience at home, the classic blowout is a look we’ll be loving on forever. Headband We love a little yuletide bobble to top off a hairstyle! Headbands are the perfect way to add a subtle hint of holiday cheer to your look without going over the top. Try a chic velvet piece for something lightly festive or a sparkly head topper to add all the glitz and glam the season calls for. However you go about it, we love a headband to enhance a holiday look! High Pony Just because Ariana Grande has ditched the high pony doesn’t mean you have to! We’re here to remind our long hair girls (or our gals who love an extension) that the high pony remains an effortlessly chic way to create a style that’s also functional (who doesn’t love having their hair completely out of their face?). Add in a little tinsel for a fun Christmas twist or pair the look with your fluffiest pair of ear muffs to keep cozy on a cold night! Holiday Bows Bows are very in right now, but their classic vibe and endless versatility will always make them a holiday trend we stand for. Half-up style that feels a little lacking? Add a bow! Low bun that’s looking a little dowdy? We think it could use a bow! Clips in your hair that aren’t looking quite festive enough? Try some little bows! Sleek & Shiny Glass hair is one of the newest trends of the moment, taking classically straight locks and hitting them with just the right amount of shine that the whole style looks sleek, polished, and well, glassy. We recommend using one of our classic straightening tools, the Triangl Pro, to smooth out your hair. Then, add a little hair oil to give the look that final, shiny touch. How are you doing your hair this holiday season? Let us know in the comments!

That way, you don’t have to feel guilty when you decide that you simply need to keep one 😊 Jousse Mend Masque The winter haircare essential! Maria’s favorite for hydration, shine, and most importantly, protection, Jousse Mend Masque is a premium hair treatment that can be used in conjunction with your shampoo & conditioner routine (we, of course, recommend Jousse Cleanse & Condition) to add a level of luxury to your haircare regimen. Not only does this fortifying mask keep your hair safe from the winter elements (frizz, dryness, static, etc.), it also leaves your ends feeling hydrated, your strands feeling healthy, and your hair looking absolutely fabulous! Plus, it’s small enough to fit in a stocking! Run, don’t walk for this ultra-premium gift that will leave any recipient feeling fabulous. Ion Hot Rollers With a record-breaking sellout on QVC, the Ion Hot Rollers are back in a big way (and we’re not just talking about the volume they’ll give you)! Customers old and new have been completely obsessed with the return of this classic styling set. With both short and long options, these rollers contain individual heaters inside each roller, making them as effective as 12 individual tools. They heat in 2-3 minutes and actually maintain that heat off their base for up to 20 minutes. Best of all? Once you put them in your hair, you can go about your routine. No need to let your heat styling hold you up. The perfect gift for the girl on the go, the mom who can’t stand still, or (our favorite) the one who wants to treat herself (that’s right, we mean you!) 4 Reasons You May Experience Hair Loss

4 Reasons You May Experience Hair Loss

by Calista Tools on Nov 08 2024
Hair loss is a scary and often overwhelming topic. Whether you’re putting your hair through distress or experiencing serious life changes, hair loss can occur as a common side effect. Today, we’re breaking down 4 of the reasons you may be experiencing some hair loss and giving solutions where we feel qualified to do so. If you’re truly concerned about your hair loss, we always recommend addressing this with a medical professional. Calista is here to help when it comes to hair, but we would never claim to know or diagnose anyone’s personal health journey. Stress How you’re feeling on the inside can have some real influence on how you feel on the outside. Chronic stress is known to cause hair loss because it disrupts the hair growth cycle and puts the follicles into a resting phase faster than usual. When follicles transfer to a resting phase quickly, large amounts of hair will shed at once. What To Do: This is a topic on which we recommend speaking to a professional! Managing stress is an incredibly personal experience and will largely depend on lifestyle and personal health. Too Much Treatment It’s no secret that over processing your hair is the fast track to dead ends, breakage, and dryness. Unfortunately, using harsh coloring products, bleaches, or perming products on your hair regularly can also result in hair loss. What To Do: Limit extreme chemical treatments as much as possible and make sure you’re replenishing your hair with nutrients, minerals, and moisture by using hydrating conditioners and a rich hair mask. Hormonal Changes Whether it’s pregnancy, menopause, or anything in between, hormonal changes can cause hair to thin or even fall out. While the most common cause is related to your thyroid, there could be any number of hormonal imbalances that can lead to hair loss. What To Do: This is a topic on which we recommend speaking to a professional! Hormone changes are specific to the person experiencing them, so speaking with a medical professional is the best option. Your Styling Technique Heat exposure, tight twists or ponytails, under or over washing – all of these things can factor into hair loss. Most commonly, using unsafe heat on your hair and doing so too often will wipe your hair of natural oils and leave it dry and prone to breakage. What To Do: Limit your heat styling to hair tools that employ ionic technology to maintain the moisture in your hair and prevent breakage. Give your hair a chance to breathe and take it out of tight configurations every so often.

How Often Should You Shampoo Your Hair?

How Often Should You Shampoo Your Hair?

by Calista Tools on Oct 25 2024
2
Lately, there’s lots of talk about the when and why of shampooing your hair. While much of this can come down to preference, hair type, and more – our founder, Maria McCool, is here to voice her thoughts on all things shampooing. She’s talking the benefits of washing your hair on a regular basis, the ins and outs of different hair types, and her expertise on scalp care. The Benefits of Daily Shampooing Shampooing your hair every day ensures that your hair and scalp are free of dirt, oils, and product build-up. Ultimately, the choice to shampoo your hair daily or not really has to do with how your hair reacts to it and how you like your hair to be. People think that daily shampooing is bad, but it’s really not! Back in the day, hair dressers would suggest that people skip daily shampoos so as not to ruin their color. That’s largely because the quality of shampoo available wasn’t as high as it is now. Shampoos used to be harsher on the hair and strip the color. Now, there are so many shampoo and conditioner options that are exfoliating and hydrating to the scalp and hair while totally preserving any color treatments. You should think about hair shampooing your hair the way you think about performing your skincare routine - you clean your skin every day, so why wouldn’t you clean your scalp and hair? Which Hair Types Benefit Most? Generally speaking, oily hair types, hair that uses a lot of product, and aging hair benefit the most from shampooing their hair daily. However, all hair types can benefit from daily shampoos if they so choose! It is not inherently bad for your hair by any means. I have clients who always say their hair is better on the second or third day after shampooing, which is completely fine - I believe everyone should do what works for them! But I know just as many clients who prefer their hair when it’s cleaned daily. I’ll also add that as we age, we need the conditioning for our hair to look youthful and healthy. I find if I don’t shampoo my hair daily, it’s the same as me not putting moisturizer on. My scalp becomes scaly and my hair looks dry, whereas when I shampoo and condition, my hair becomes silky and healthy-looking again. Maria’s Major Takeaways Don’t be afraid of shampooing every day! Technically speaking, it is the better thing for your hair. Not shampooing your hair can cause problems with the pores on your scalp and negatively affect hair growth and hair quality. Your scalp has to be manipulated to get the blood flowing to feed the bulb of the hair and promote proper growth. When you skip shampoos for days and days, it’s not better for the overall health of the hair. That being said, if you really feel your hair is better on the second or third day, then go for it! I just want to make sure people know that shampooing on the daily is very much a good choice too!

Our Favorite Fall Styles

by Calista Tools on Oct 11 2024
Fall is upon us and that means taking in all of the amazing styling choices that come along with it! Of course we love incorporating fun jackets and leather boots, but at Calista, we’re more concerned with the styling choices you make with your hair. There are so many fun ways to change up your hair for fall! Whether that be a fresh cut and color or a new updo or hair accessory, keeping your look fresh and up-to-date for the season is a fun way to tap into your personal style and make any moment feel a little more BeautyBrave. Let’s talk trends! Return of the Bob You’ve likely seen it all over the place, but the Bob haircut is back in a major way. The majority of the Bobs we’re seeing are one-length cuts that hit at the chin, many featuring lots of volume and texture. While Bobs aren’t necessarily a seasonal look, a short cut is the perfect opportunity to cut off your dead ends from summer and give your hair the fresh start it deserves. Golden Tones When the temperatures get cooler, the colors get warmer – the same can be true for hair colors! This fall, we’re seeing a lot of celebrities and influencers play with warming up their color. From dimensional balayages with tones of copper and warm browns to golden highlights that help add a little contrast to a standard hair color, giving your hair a dose of warm hues can be the perfect way to refresh and recharge your look for fall. Retro Touches Not sure you want to kick off the fall with a serious hair change? There are plenty of fun trends to partake in that don’t permanently alter your hair one bit! This fall, try adding a few retro touches to your look. Something as simple as a silk scarf or a classic bow can really take a style (any length, any texture, any age) to the next level and give you something fun to do with your hairstyle. Calling all Jousse fans! The newest member of the line is here to solve your styling woes while keeping your hair soft, shiny, and most importantly, healthy! Pronounced “juice,” this Calista line is all about nourishing, protecting, and restoring hair from root to end. Keep reading to learn more about what makes Jousse Styling Elixir a must-have product. The Basics Created with naturally-derived ingredients that encourage healthy hair, Jousse Styling Elixir offers a 3-in-1 hybrid formula with the smoothing nature of a cream, the control and hold of a gel, and the texturizing and plumping properties of a mousse. Used on damp, towel-dried hair, this product can help highlight natural curl, give hair a smooth finish, and offer just the right amount of control for styles that last all day. A formula that has been a fan-favorite at Calista since 2018, Jousse Styling Elixir is actually the rebrand of beloved product, Jousse Gel & Mousse Hybrid. We knew our customers loved this former product and would be thrilled to have it back in new packaging! The Benefits Smooths like a Cream All Jousse products are formulated to reduce frizz and give hair a silkier, smoother feel. Jousse Styling Elixir is formulated with Dimethicone, an ingredient known to have smoothing properties that can help control frizz and leave hair with a soft, shiny feel. Because this product is used on damp hair, it sets hair up for less frizz when it dries, whether that be with a blow dryer or naturally! Controls like a Gel Jousse Styling Elixir offers the perfect amount of control, acting as a hair gel might when it comes to highlighting natural curls and waves. This product is uniquely formulated to give hair that long-lasting hold without the sticky feeling or flaking that many hair gels have. Plumps like a Mousse Formulated with hydrolyzed wheat protein, Jousse Styling Elixir actively plumps up your hair, while strengthening the hair shaft to prevent breakage. The pea-sized amount you use on damp hair is just enough to infuse your hair with body and bounce. Jousse Styling Elixir is also formulated with collagen, which actively encourages thicker, fuller hair Customer Reactions “For being so light the elixir has such a strong hold on curls and it makes them last for days!” “The gel-cream-mousse is not sticky or tacky, and stays lightweight on my curly hair. It's great for keeping the frizz down and letting me have control of my waves without being crunchy or flat.” “I use this every time I wash my hair! It helps so much with styling! My hair always feels more shiny, and voluminous!” “This product is a very useful addition to my hairstyling arsenal! It provides hold without stiffness and definitely increases the feeling of volume in my hair. It is not silicone-y or slippery, but leaves a great shine.” Will you be trying Jousse Styling Elixir? Why Do Older Women Have Short Hair?

Why Do Older Women Have Short Hair?

by Calista Tools on Sep 13 2024
1
It’s a valid question! For generations upon generations, older women have been depicted almost exclusively with short styles. Whether it’s a well-kept pixie or a super short bob, women 65+, and sometimes even younger, are shown with short, cropped styles that we’ve come to associate with aging. The question remains…why is this? Today, we’re talking through some of the main reasons older women have short hair and why it’s a trend you definitely don’t have to follow. Hair Changes As we age, our hair can change in texture, color, and thickness. Hair produces less melanin, so color pigmentation lessens and more grays pop up. Texture can change completely, leaving hair drier and frizzier than previous years. And of course, the growth cycle slows down, so hair becomes less thick and full. Short hair is an easy fix for hiding these signs of aging, making hair appear fuller. A short cut and a little hair dye can go a long way! Skin Changes While modern skincare and treatments have advanced tremendously, gravity is still a factor as we age. As our skin produces less collagen and elastin, it begins to sag. When our faces droop, they appear longer. A short haircut or even adding short layers to the hair can help create lift and volume to offset this effect, accentuating the bone structure and taking away from the overall longer look. Maintenance This one is pretty basic – short hair is easy! Whether you apply a styling product, use a heat styling tool, or just go all-natural, having less hair just makes the entire process that much easier to deal with. Additionally, as we age, hair is more prone to breakage and dryness, so you won’t have to deal with frazzled ends or excess frizz. Confidence At Calista, we’re all about this last piece! Confidence is key no matter what you do with your hair. The cut that’s right for you is the cut that makes you feel your best. If you love your long locks and take pride in maintaining a lengthy ‘do as you age, more power to you! There is no rule book and there are no official decrees on what we can or can’t do with our hair as we age. Cut it, keep it, grow it, dye it, leave it. The most important thing about getting older is that you always do whatever makes you feel brave about your own beauty, or as we call it, BeautyBrave!

The built-in styling timer provides three timing options (4, 6, or 8 seconds) indicating how long to hold each wave, limiting heat exposure and ensuring styling remains consistent. 3 heat settings make this tool perfect for all hair types, allowing for less heat on color-treated or fine hair and more heat on coarse or resistant hair (320°F, 360°F, or 400°F). How Hair Changes Post-Pregnancy

How Hair Changes Post-Pregnancy

by Calista Tools on Aug 16 2024
After pregnancy, it’s very possible that your hair is the last thing you’re concerned about. However, there are serious changes to your hair that you could encounter post-pregnancy that can be surprising, confusing, and even overwhelming. Today, we’re breaking down the most common hair changes that many experience after pregnancy so that you can be aware and prepared! If you’re truly concerned about your hair changes after pregnancy, we always recommend addressing this with a medical professional. Calista is here to help when it comes to hair, but we would never claim to know or diagnose anyone’s personal health journey! Thickness We know that hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause additional hair growth on the head and body, often leaving hair on the head thicker and fuller. This can become noticeable as early as 15 weeks into pregnancy. While the individual strands of hair do not thicken, the increase of estrogen during pregnancy causes the hair to stay in the growing phase of its cycle for longer. After pregnancy, you may notice that your hair feels less thick – this is usually just a return to its previous condition that can become noticeable within 6 months after delivery. Texture Beyond just thinning, hair after pregnancy may look like it’s lost a bit of luster and shine. Hair can be drier and frizzier than it was previously. The texture of your hair can also change due to lack of care because of the time and energy spent being a new mom! Excess Shedding Finally, hair shedding is the most common hair-related side effect after pregnancy. Medically known as telogen effluvium, post-partum hair loss occurs shortly after childbirth due to the body’s changing levels of progesterone and estrogen. While it may vary from person to person, the hair should grow back entirely in 3–6 months. Post-Pregnancy Hair Tips Switch to a fortifying, volumizing cleanse and conditioner Use a hydrating hair mask and apply it to the ends of the hair to handle frizz Try a new haircut that makes hair appear fuller (bobs, layers, etc.) Be gentle with yourself and patient with your hair

3 Heatless Hairstyles to Try this Summer

by Calista Tools on Aug 02 2024
August is here and it’s hotter than ever! Sometimes, the best way to beat the heat when it comes to your hair is trying out styles that exclude heat altogether! Today, we’re talking heatless hairstyles that will keep you feeling (and looking) oh so cool for the rest of these dog days of summer. Classic Bun The easiest of our suggestions, the bun is a timeless classic. Whether you have super long locks or are working with a chic bob, you can create this style however it suits your look. Part your hair in the middle and gather it at the nape of your neck for a modern, low-bun look. Take a half-up, half-down approach and give yourself a cute mini bun. Bring back the top knot and get all of your hair out of your face for a convenient and cute style. Tie a bow on it for an added dash of cuteness! No matter how you do it, the bun is a classic and easy way to style your hair in the summer and stay cool in the process. Tousled Texture That flawless beachy texture can be yours when you use the right product for you! This is an easy, heatless solution to creating a tousled look that is perfect for the end of summer. If you have naturally curly hair, we recommend a foam or styling cream that will help enhance your natural texture and give you that perfect surfside look. For straighter or shorter hair, try a styling paste to give your hair some lift and bring out some piecey texture. Heatless Volume Have you tried our Volumizing Soft-Grip Rollers yet? Heatless volume made simple was our goal when creating these amazing rollers. Available in two sizes for all hair lengths, they’re the perfect solution for adding volume without adding heat. Simply roll hair up, set your volume with a little hairspray, and wait 10-20 minutes before taking them out. You’ll leave with some locked-in volume and be amazed at the time you saved styling your hair totally hands-free. Plus, no heat necessary! What’s your favorite heatless hairstyle for summer? Let us know in the comments!

Handling Summer Hair Concerns

by Calista Tools on Jul 05 2024
Summer is here and so are the hair concerns that come with it! While we all love having fun in the sun, it’s no secret that the balmy summer temps can wreak havoc on your locks. Today, we’re breaking down some of the most common summer hair concerns and giving you the tips, info, and product recs for how to beat the heat when it comes to your hair. Oily Hair Why It Happens As you may already know (or experience), your hair can be weighed down by excess oil in the summertime. While the most commonly recognized reason for this is an increase in sweat from the hot weather, there’s another factor that not everyone is aware of.  The sebaceous glands at the roots of your hair create an oily substance called sebum. While sebum is a vital factor in healthy hair, hot temperatures or an excess of humidity can cause an overproduction of sebum, making hair feel and appear greasy. What Helps Exfoliate the scalp! Using a cleanse and conditioning regimen that exfoliates your scalp and actually comes in contact with the roots of your hair is the only way to ensure those pores remain unclogged and prevent excess sebum buildup. Hair Falling Flat Why It Happens This is typically a fine, straight hair problem. During the summer, there’s excess moisture in the air which can cause hair to return to its natural state. With fine, straight hair, this often looks like hair falling flat and appearing a little lifeless. What Helps While we always recommend using a styling tool to achieve the look you want, when it comes to fighting against weather, we suggest you embrace it! All hair is beautiful and should be celebrated for what it is! Tuck your locks into a sleeked back bun, throw it up in a pony with a fun bow, or leave it down and go for a chic, shiny look. Add a shine enhancing product to solidify your look. Hair Going Frizzy Why It Happens Just like falling flat is a straight, fine hair problem, going frizzy is a thick, curly hair problem. That same excess moisture in the air causes hair to return to its natural state and works to negate the effects of products that would normally help hair remain smooth and sleek. What Helps There are a lot of products out there that help negate frizz, but just like we explained above, fighting against the weather is often a losing battle. Embrace your curls and use a curl enhancing product to tame the frizz a bit instead of trying to create a totally different look. Sun Damage Why It Happens Just like your face, your scalp needs to be protected. Sun damage to your hair is very real, and can even affect the overall appearance of your locks (especially on color-treated hair). UV rays can strip your hair of natural oils and even weaken the protein structure of each strand, causing premature splitting or breakage. What Helps Products with UV protection built in are the best way to fight against sun damage. Just like you take care of your skin, remember that protecting your hair from the sun is equally important – especially in the summer! Do you have some specific hair concerns we can help you with this summer? Let us know in the comments!

What is Calista Fusion Technology?

by Calista Tools on Jun 21 2024
If you’ve ever purchased a Calista tool, you know that our Fusion Technology is mentioned everywhere from our product pages and QVC messaging to the back of our boxes and inside of our instruction booklets. It’s one of the things that makes our tools unique, professional, and better for your hair. So let’s talk tech! The back of our boxes read “Fusion Technology combines Ionic and Ceramic properties to create frizz-free waves, zero damage, and healthy shine.” We’re breaking down what that means and how these properties actually prevent frizz, help protect your hair against heat damage, and add shine. Ceramic 101 Ceramic is basically a clay composite material that creates a far infrared heat which penetrates the hair shaft, preserving hair's natural moisture and luster. The main benefit of ceramic is that it heats up quickly and evenly, leading to less damaging hot spots that can destroy fragile hair strands. Ionic 101 Ionic technology produces millions of negatively charged ions. These ions break down the positively charged ions present in water. In breaking down these positive ions, ionic technology prevents water from soaking into your hair shaft and causing frizz. Additionally, tourmaline is often associated with ionic. To keep it simple, tourmaline essentially supercharges the ionic properties and adds even more negative ions into the mix, giving you even more frizz control. Calista Fusion Technology Now that we’ve broken down ceramic and ionic, you know that any hair tool that uses these properties is maintaining the health of your hair by providing moisture protection and lack of excess heat exposure. At Calista, we marry ceramic and ionic properties and call it our Fusion Technology. In fusing these two important materials in all of our tools, we’re making sure that the health and integrity of your hair is our top priority.  What’s your favorite Calista tool? Let us know in the comments!
