Handling Summer Hair Concerns

Handling Summer Hair Concerns

Summer is here and so are the hair concerns that come with it! While we all love having fun in the sun, it’s no secret that the balmy summer temps can wreak havoc on your locks. Today, we’re breaking down some of the most common summer hair concerns and giving you the tips, info, and product recs for how to beat the heat when it comes to your hair.

Oily Hair

Why It Happens

As you may already know (or experience), your hair can be weighed down by excess oil in the summertime. While the most commonly recognized reason for this is an increase in sweat from the hot weather, there’s another factor that not everyone is aware of.  The sebaceous glands at the roots of your hair create an oily substance called sebum. While sebum is a vital factor in healthy hair, hot temperatures or an excess of humidity can cause an overproduction of sebum, making hair feel and appear greasy.

What Helps

Exfoliate the scalp! Using a cleanse and conditioning regimen that exfoliates your scalp and actually comes in contact with the roots of your hair is the only way to ensure those pores remain unclogged and prevent excess sebum buildup.

Hair Falling Flat

Why It Happens

This is typically a fine, straight hair problem. During the summer, there’s excess moisture in the air which can cause hair to return to its natural state. With fine, straight hair, this often looks like hair falling flat and appearing a little lifeless.

What Helps

While we always recommend using a styling tool to achieve the look you want, when it comes to fighting against weather, we suggest you embrace it! All hair is beautiful and should be celebrated for what it is! Tuck your locks into a sleeked back bun, throw it up in a pony with a fun bow, or leave it down and go for a chic, shiny look. Add a shine enhancing product to solidify your look.

Hair Going Frizzy

Why It Happens

Just like falling flat is a straight, fine hair problem, going frizzy is a thick, curly hair problem. That same excess moisture in the air causes hair to return to its natural state and works to negate the effects of products that would normally help hair remain smooth and sleek.

What Helps

There are a lot of products out there that help negate frizz, but just like we explained above, fighting against the weather is often a losing battle. Embrace your curls and use a curl enhancing product to tame the frizz a bit instead of trying to create a totally different look.

Sun Damage

Why It Happens

Just like your face, your scalp needs to be protected. Sun damage to your hair is very real, and can even affect the overall appearance of your locks (especially on color-treated hair). UV rays can strip your hair of natural oils and even weaken the protein structure of each strand, causing premature splitting or breakage.

What Helps

Products with UV protection built in are the best way to fight against sun damage. Just like you take care of your skin, remember that protecting your hair from the sun is equally important – especially in the summer!
